Gout

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis marked by sudden and excruciating attacks of pain, swelling, and redness in the joints, most commonly affecting the big toe. It occurs when urate crystals accumulate in the joints due to high levels of uric acid in the blood, stemming from various factors including genetics, diet, medications, or underlying health conditions. Alongside the big toe, gout can also target other joints like ankles, knees, elbows, and wrists.

Treatment strategies focus on alleviating pain and inflammation during acute attacks with medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or colchicine. Long-term management involves medications to lower uric acid levels, like allopurinol or febuxostat, coupled with lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, hydration, and avoidance of trigger foods rich in purines. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to address complications like tophi formation or kidney stones.
