A foot fracture is when a bone or multiple bones break or crack. This usually occurs in the setting of trauma, whether a slip or fall or something more severe like a motor vehicle accident. Common foot fractures include stress fractures of the metatarsals, and toe fractures.
Foot fractures are sometimes overlooked at Urgent care centers and Emergency Rooms so its important to always have a follow up with a podiatrist after a foot injury. Symptoms like difficulty walking, swelling, bruising and pain are all signs of a foot fracture. It is important to be certain as fractures can have trouble healing if not properly treated and in the foot this can lead to significant pain.
Most foot fractures can be treated with a small Velcro stiff soled shoe, while others even some small and insignificant looking foot fractures may require surgery to heal.
